How to display a Smiley in WordPress?

To add a smiley to a WordPress post, you literally have to type only a text-equivalent of that smiley. WordPress emoji function interprets the text and display the emoticon. For example:

  • Type :)to show ๐Ÿ™‚
  • Type :(to show ๐Ÿ™
  • Type :Dto show ๐Ÿ˜€

Here is a list of emoticons you can use in WordPress posts:

  • ๐Ÿ™‚ | :)(smile)
  • ๐Ÿ™ | :((sad)
  • ๐Ÿ˜€ | :D(grin)
  • ๐Ÿ˜ฎ | :o(eek)
  • ๐Ÿ˜ฏ | 8O(shock)
  • ๐Ÿ˜• | :?(puzzled)
  • 8) | 8)(cool)
  • ๐Ÿ˜ก | :x(mad)
  • ๐Ÿ˜› | :P(razz)
  • ๐Ÿ˜ | :|(neutral)
  • ๐Ÿ˜‰ | ;)(wink)
  • ๐Ÿ˜† | :lol:(laughs)
  • ๐Ÿ˜ณ | :oops:(Oops)
  • ๐Ÿ˜ฅ | :cry:(Cry)
  • ๐Ÿ‘ฟ | :evil:(Evil)
  • ๐Ÿ˜ˆ | :twisted:(Twisted)
  • ๐Ÿ™„ | :roll:(Roll)
  • โ— | :!:(Exclamation)
  • โ“ | :?:(Question)
  • ๐Ÿ’ก | :idea:(Idea)
  • โžก | :arrow:(Arrow)

All the text combinations above can be used to show smileys. If a smiley text is not working, make sure there is a space before and after each smiley text otherwise it won’t display as icon.

Don’t fill your post with too much smileys. Adding one or two will be enough as smileys make extra function calls to WordPress.

Woopoo's Caution

Smileys location in WordPress:

If you wonder where all those icons are saved in WordPress then you can find all of them under wp-includes WordPress folder. The exact location is wp-incluces > images > smilies . Whenever you will type a smiley text, WordPress will make a round trip to this folder to grab the icon accordingly.

How to add custom smilies in WordPress?

WordPress goes one step forward by letting you add custom smilies in your posts. How about using your own face in those itty bitty smiley icons? Well, i can’t be that creative ๐Ÿ™‚

To use your own custom smilies instead of WordPress default smilies, first upload all smiley GIF images to your web server. For example, wp-content/images/smilies. You may need to create a directory in wp-content folder.

Add the following code in functions.php file in your themes folder:

function my_custom_smilies_src( $img_src, $img, $siteurl )
 return $siteurl.'/wp-content/images/smilies/'.$img;
add_filter( 'smilies_src', 'my_custom_smilies_src', 10, 3 );

Change the folder path in the code above if needed. Basically the function is telling WordPress to use the new path you have specified to grab emoticons instead of going to wp-includes folder.

How to turn off smileys in WordPress?

There are two methods to disable smileys. By installing a plugin or by editing functions.php in your theme’s folder.

  • Install and activate Disable Emojis plugin if you don’t want to mess with code. There are no settings for this plugin. It will simply disable smileys.

The second method involves to add code in functions.php file. Using CPanel or your WordPress FTP account, go to your themes folder and open functions.php file.

  • Add the following code at the end of the file to disable smileys.

remove_action('wp_head', 'print_emoji_detection_script', 7);
remove_action('wp_print_styles', 'print_emoji_styles');
remove_action( 'admin_print_scripts', 'print_emoji_detection_script' );
remove_action( 'admin_print_styles', 'print_emoji_styles' );

We hope adding smileys in WordPress will give you confidence to give an awesome smile to your readers ๐Ÿ™‚
